Types of Percentage Calculations Explained

Percentages are simply fractions of 100. However, depending on what you are trying to find, the mathematical formulas change significantly. Our suite covers all 5 primary percentage problems:

  • What is X% of Y? โ€” Used to find a specific slice of a whole. (Formula: X ร— Y / 100)
  • X is what % of Y? โ€” Used to find out what grade you got on a test or what ratio a number represents. (Formula: X / Y ร— 100)
  • Percent Change A to B โ€” Used to calculate growth rates, inflation, or stock market shifts. (Formula: (B - A) / |A| ร— 100)
  • Add / Subtract % โ€” The perfect tool for calculating retail discounts, adding restaurant tips, or applying sales tax. (Formula: X ยฑ (X ร— Y / 100))
  • Percent Difference โ€” Used in statistics to compare two values when neither is an obvious "original" or baseline. (Formula: |A - B| / Average(A,B) ร— 100)

Common Everyday Uses

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Retail DiscountsUse the "Add / Subtract %" mode. Enter the original price, select Subtract, and enter the 20% discount to find the final price.
๐Ÿ’ธ Tipping & Sales TaxUse the "Add / Subtract %" mode. Enter your restaurant bill, select Add, and enter 18% to find your total out-of-pocket cost.
๐Ÿ“ˆ Business GrowthUse the "Percent Change" mode. Enter last year's revenue and this year's revenue to find exactly how much your business grew.
๐Ÿซ Test Scores & GradingUse the "X is what % of Y" mode. If you scored 42 out of 50 on a test, this will instantly tell you your grade percentage (84%).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Percent Change and Percent Difference?

Percent Change is used when there is a clear chronological order (an "Old" value and a "New" value), like calculating inflation from 2020 to 2024. Percent Difference is used when comparing two values that have no clear order, like comparing the height of two different buildings.

Can I calculate negative percentages?

Yes! Our calculator fully supports negative inputs, which is particularly useful for tracking financial losses in the Percent Change calculator.

How do I calculate a 15% tip?

Select the "Add / Subtract %" tab. Enter your bill total in the first box, select "+ Add", and type 15 in the percentage box. The result will show your new total including the tip.

Is my financial data saved or uploaded?

Absolutely not. We have no databases connected to this tool. If you use the "Save to History" feature, it saves the calculation strictly to your browser's local cache (localStorage) which only you can access.
