What is a group expense tracker?

A group expense tracker is a tool that records shared costs for a trip, household, event, or project and works out a fair split between everyone involved. Instead of scribbling figures on a notepad or arguing over a spreadsheet at the end of a tour, you log each expense once — what it was, how much it cost, who paid, and how it should be divided — and the tracker handles the math. This free, browser-based tool works just like the core of popular apps such as Splitwise, but with no sign-up, no app install, and no data ever leaving your device. It supports equal splits, exact amounts, percentages and weighted shares, then calculates the smallest set of payments needed to settle the whole group. Every calculation happens locally in your browser, and your trip data is stored privately on your own computer or phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is my trip data sent to a server?

No. Everything is processed and stored locally in your browser using localStorage. Your expenses, names and amounts never leave your device, which is why the tool works even without an internet connection after loading.

Will my data still be there if I close the browser?

Yes. Your trip is automatically saved to your browser as you type. As long as you use the same browser on the same device and don’t clear your site data, you can close the tab on day 2 and pick up right where you left off on day 4.

What split modes are supported?

Four. Split equally between the chosen people, enter exact amounts each person owes, split by percentages, or assign weighted shares (for example a couple counting as two shares). The tool validates each split as you type.

How does the “who pays who” settlement work?

The tool calculates each person’s net balance (what they paid minus their fair share, adjusted for any payments you’ve recorded), then uses a greedy algorithm to match the biggest creditors with the biggest debtors. This produces the smallest practical number of transfers needed to settle the whole group.

Can I use it for non-trip expenses?

Yes. It works equally well for shared housing, recurring bills, office pools, events, dinners or any situation where a group needs to split costs fairly.

How do I move my data to another device?

Use “Export JSON” to download a backup file, then open the tool on the other device and use “Import JSON” to load it. You can also export a CSV for spreadsheets or print a settlement summary.
