True redaction: the output is fully flattened to pixels, so hidden text under the boxes is permanently removed — not just covered.

How to Use the Redaction Tool

  1. Drop or select an image (JPG, PNG, WebP) or a PDF — nothing is uploaded, it stays on your device.
  2. Pick a style (Black, White, Color, Blur, or Pixelate), then drag a box over each piece of sensitive information.
  3. For PDFs, type a word or name in Auto-Redact and press Enter, or tap a preset (Emails, Phone, Card #s, SSN, IP) to box every match automatically.
  4. Switch to Select / Move to reposition, resize, or delete any box. Use Undo/Redo freely.
  5. Click Flatten & Download. The file is rasterised so redacted content is gone for good — not recoverable.

What Is Image & PDF Redaction?

Redaction is the process of permanently removing confidential or private information from a document before sharing it. Drawing a black rectangle in a normal editor is not secure — the text underneath often remains selectable, searchable, or recoverable.

This tool does real redaction: it renders your image or each PDF page to pixels, burns the redaction marks directly into those pixels, and rebuilds the output from the flattened result. There is no hidden layer left behind, so names, account numbers, signatures, and faces are genuinely erased. Because all processing happens locally in your browser, your files never touch a server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the redacted text really removed, or just hidden?
It is genuinely removed. The tool converts your page to an image, paints the redaction marks onto those pixels, and exports from the flattened image. No selectable or recoverable text remains beneath the marks.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything — reading, redacting and exporting — happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, which makes this safe for confidential and regulated files.
Can I redact a multi-page PDF?
Yes. Use the Prev/Next buttons to move between pages. Each page keeps its own boxes, and the final download contains every page with all redactions applied.
How does Auto-Redact work?
For PDFs with a real text layer, it reads the text positions and draws boxes over every match of your search term or a chosen pattern (email, phone, card, SSN, IP). Always review the result before downloading, as detection depends on the document’s text quality.
What is the difference between blur and pixelate?
Blur softens the area into a smooth smear, while pixelate breaks it into large blocks. Both are visually obscuring; for maximum security on truly sensitive data, use a solid Black box.
Does the output keep good quality?
PDF pages are rendered at high resolution and images are processed at full size, so the result stays sharp. Choose PNG for lossless output or JPG for a smaller file.
