What Is VAT / GST?

VAT (Value-Added Tax) and GST (Goods and Services Tax) are consumption taxes added to the price of most goods and services. They go by different names worldwide — VAT in the UK and EU, GST in Australia, India, Canada, Singapore and New Zealand, IVA in Spain and Italy, MwSt in Germany, TVA in France — but the math is the same.

This calculator handles the three calculations everyone needs:

  • Add VAT: you know the net (pre-tax) price and need the gross (final) price.
  • Remove VAT (reverse VAT): you have a final price that already includes VAT and need the net price plus how much VAT was charged — the most-searched calculation for expense reports.
  • VAT Only: you just want the tax portion of an amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is VAT calculated?
Adding VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate/100). Example: £100 net + 20% VAT = £120 gross.

Removing VAT (reverse): Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate/100). Example: £120 gross at 20% VAT = £100 net + £20 VAT.
What's the difference between VAT and GST?
They're functionally the same — a consumption tax on goods and services. Different countries just use different names. The UK, EU and Nordic countries call it VAT; Australia, NZ, India, Canada and Singapore call it GST. The calculation is identical.
How do I calculate VAT "backwards" from a final price?
That's our Remove VAT mode. Type the gross (final) price, pick the rate, and the calculator shows the net price plus the VAT portion. Example: a £120 receipt at 20% VAT breaks down to £100 net + £20 VAT.
Why does my country have multiple VAT rates?
Most countries have a standard rate for general goods and services, plus reduced rates for essentials like food, books, medicine, transport or hospitality, and sometimes a zero-rated category. Use the country dropdown to see all of them.
Are these rates always current?
We update country rates regularly, but VAT/GST rates do change. Always verify with your local tax authority for the most current figures, especially around fiscal-year transitions.
Can I use this for invoicing?
Yes — click "Invoice mode" to add multiple line items, each with description, quantity, discount, unit price and its own VAT rate. The tool calculates per-line totals plus the overall subtotal, VAT and grand total, and exports to CSV.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. No figures are sent to any server — your data stays private.
