What is an Image Format Converter?

An image format converter changes a picture's file type — for example, turning a transparent PNG into a smaller JPG, or converting older formats into modern WebP for faster website loading. Different formats have different strengths: PNG keeps transparency and lossless quality, JPG compresses photos to tiny sizes, and WebP offers excellent compression with transparency support. You can also upload AVIF images (the newest, smallest format) and convert them to widely-supported PNG, JPG, or WebP. Our converter runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API, so nothing is uploaded anywhere — and re-encoding also strips EXIF metadata for privacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Image Converter free?

Yes — completely free, no signup, no watermarks, no daily limit.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded, and EXIF metadata is stripped during re-encoding.

Which format should I choose?

PNG for transparency or graphics, JPG for photos and small files, and WebP for the best compression while keeping transparency (modern browsers). AVIF files can be uploaded and converted to any of these.

How does "compress to a target size" work?

For JPG and WebP the tool automatically tunes quality to land just under your chosen KB limit. PNG is lossless so it ignores the target. If the smallest possible version is still above the limit, you'll get the smallest one achievable.

What happens to transparency when converting to JPG?

JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you select (default: white). WebP, AVIF, and PNG keep transparency.

Can I convert AVIF or HEIC images?

AVIF input works in most modern browsers, so you can convert AVIF to PNG, JPG, or WebP. Browsers can't create AVIF via the Canvas API, so AVIF isn't offered as an output format. HEIC isn't natively decodable by browsers — convert HEIC to JPG/PNG first (phones often do this automatically when sharing).

Can I batch convert hundreds of images?

Yes — though very large batches depend on your device's memory. We recommend 50 or fewer at a time for smooth performance.

Does this work on mobile?

Yes — fully responsive on iOS, Android, and tablets, with dark mode and fullscreen.
